No More Importation Of Petrol Once My Refinery Is Ready – Dangote

Aliko Dangote, president of Dangote Group, has assured Nigerians that when his refinery is ready, the country would no longer need to import petroleum products.
Speaking at the site of his refinery in Lekki, Dangote said his refinery would put an end to fertiliser importation in Nigeria, transforming the country into a net exporter of refined crude and fertilizer.
“Today, Nigeria imports 100 percent of its fertilizer, but when we finish, Nigeria will be the largest exporter of Urea and Ammonia in Africa,” Dangote said.
“The refinery is the largest single line in Africa and it will meet our total domestic requirement and save foreign exchange. “Thirty-eight per cent of CBN’s foreign exchange is spent on importation of petroleum products. But we can serve the whole West African market.”
Dangote said he had been working with the government and the central bank of Nigeria (CBN) in diversifying the economy.
“We are going to serve the whole domestic market in the next 10 years and also export. We have actually been doing this for a very long time to diversify the economy.
“The government will lay down the policies. The CBN will assist in terms of long-term funding through the banks and even directly now because they have actually helped us quite a lot. That is what we are now trying to do.”
Godwin Emefiele, the CBN governor, who visited the Dangote free trade zone, said the CBN would provide the needed foreign exchange for the refinery, adding that the refinery, upon completion, would generate $6 billion dollars in foreign exchange for Nigeria.
“Imagine what would happen to the savings in foreign exchange by the time the fertilizer plant is completed in 2017 and by the time the refinery and petrochemical plant is completed during the early part of 2018. “We expect that by the time these projects are completed, they will not only meet the needs of our domestic requirements – by the time they are completed, he (Dangote) will be exporting these products to the point where he will be selling foreign exchange to Nigerians and CBN to the tune of almost $6 billion yearly.
“That is the kind of project we think we should support and we think that we need to encourage more Nigerians to begin to think like Aliko Dangote.”

The Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), in its world oil outlook for 2015 said Dangote is responsible for nearly 50 percent of refinery projects in Africa for the next five years. The refinery is expected to cost about N2.8 trillion and refine about 650,000 barrels of crude oil per day.

Abia: It’s justice at last — Otti

WHILE PDP is lamenting and condemning the Court of Appeal judgment which sacked Governor Okezie Ikpeazu as the Governor of Abia State, APGA partisans are rejoicing. For them, it was justice restored at last.
Thus the moment news of the judgment filtered into the State, celebration erupted in various parts of the State by APGA members and their supporters.
APGA said the judgment was “liberation of the good people of Abia from the bonds of mediocrity and self-centred oligarchy”.
By Anayo Okoli
OTTI reacts: For Dr. Alex Otti, who was declared winner by the Court of Appeal, the judgment was “justice at last”.
He said: “It is said that the windmill of justice may grind slowly but it surely does grind. After more than seven months of tortuous and needless legal tussle, the will of the people has triumphed! Today’s ruling is the triumph of the abiding will of the people against the principalities of thuggery, barefaced robbery and high-handed impunity. It is victory of the silent majority over a noisy, unjust and parochial minority”.
“You must recall that Abia, until the emergence of incompetent and insensitive “lootocracy”, was the commercial powerhouse of West Africa. It was an industrial centre where multinationals and indigenous entrepreneurs held sway. It was the area that produced such great men as Michael Okpara, Dick Tiger, Jaja Wachuku, Alvan Ikoku, Nnanna Kalu, OC Ememe and so on. Today, it is a shadow of its former self. Our mission is to restore our beloved state to greatness”.

“For all of us who believe that it is Abia First, I welcome you to come with us to make our state great again. To our opponents including those responsible for what we have gone through in the last couple of months, we extend a hand of fellowship to them as we invite them to join hands with us as we seek to provide credible leadership to our people and restore their dignity. The journey will not be an easy one but I assure you that the result will be fulfilling”.
Reacting on the court decision, APGA Chairman in Abia State, Augustine Ehiemere described it as “a landmark judgment” which he said has proved that the judiciary still has Judges of integrity. According to him, the judgement cannot be faulted because “the judges were thorough in their findings”.
Ehiemere said the party dedicated the victory to Abians and the late chieftain of the party Abbott Otisi Kalu who was actively involved in the struggle to liberate Abia, until he died recently.
He condemned the protests by PDP and accused them of hiring miscreants to cause a breach of the peace in the commercial city of Aba, and described the protest as the handiwork of the enemies of the state, who wish to remain in power against the wishes of the people.
Handiwork of enemies of the state
APGA chairman alleged that the PDP government recruited street urchins in Aba to foment trouble by blocking some roads in the city ‘’just to create a false impression that the people of the state were unhappy with the judgment of the Court of Appeal”.
Saying that Abia people were happy with the Court of Appeal judgment, the party chairman noted ‘’that the protest had exposed the sponsors as the enemies of the good people of Abia state”.
To him, “the judgment has ended the era of looting and restored the people’s hope that our children will graduate and get befitting jobs rather than keke business, that our schools and hospitals should be equipped and that our public water schemes down should function again”.
The party later organized what it tagged “Victory Rally” which took thousands of its members and supporters round some major streets in Umuahia- For now the two parties are waiting, engaging in all manner of prayers for the Supreme Court decision to swing in their direction.

Abia: Judgment an anomaly — Ikpeazu

FOR the ruling PDP in Abia State, the December 31st Court of Appeal judgment which sacked Governor Okezie Ikpeazu and declared Dr. Alex Otti of APGA winner of the April 2015 governorship election was a big blow that was never expected. For them it was beyond their imagination and thus, they naturally reacted adversely with protests in Aba and attacks against the Justices of the Court.
But Governor Okezie himself took the court decision calmly. Immediately, he received the news, the governor met with stakeholders of his party and issued a statement, calling for calm noting that was heading to the Supreme Court to test the Appeal Court decision.
IKPEAZU’s reaction: Describing   the judgment as an “anomaly” which would be corrected by the Supreme Court”, the Governor said: “I have instructed my lawyers to file an immediate appeal at the Supreme Court, I wish to assure all Abians that all is well. ”.
The next day, Saturday, 2/1/16, supporters of the party from the Ugwa Ngwa political bloc, where Ikpeazu comes from, staged protests in Aba. Led by the former Senate President, Chief Adolphus Wabara, the protesters blocked roads in Aba area to show their rejection of the judgment.
Also, the party’s chairman in the State, Chief Emma Nwaka condemned the Court of Appeal judgment, saying that it came to the party as a rude shock. Nwaka recalled that the party had earlier protested the composition of the membership of the panel of Justices that handled the matter on the ground that all of them came from the same judicial division. He said the Justices erred in law by relying on the Card Reader to arrive at their judgment which he said was against the stipulation of the Electoral Act.
Nwaka further faulted the judgment on the ground that the Appeal Court has no right to cancel the elections in Obingwa, Osisioma and Isiala Ngwa North council areas.
Many other stakeholders of the party including Chief Charles Ogbonnaya, Ukpai Agwu Ukpai, Movement for Abia Reunion, the party’s major grassroots structure and the zonal National Vice Chairman of the party in the South East zone, Col. Austin Akobundu.
Chief Charles Ogbonnaya, who is the Abia State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, condemned the judgment as very biased but called on the supporters of the two the parties to conduct themselves peacefully, even as he accused APGA supporters of wielding dangerous weapons during their victory rally.
Dangerous weapons
Ogbonnaya, who said that both parties have the right to hold rallies and demonstrations, insisted that they must be peaceful devoid of any violence. He alleged that he saw APGA youths in the television wielding dangerous weapons during their protest on Wednesday.
Ukpai also faulted the judgment, saying that it never followed the rule law and expressed hope that the Supreme Court would set it aside.
For the National Vice Chairman of the party in the South East zone, Austin Akobundu, the court judgment was a “reckless display of judicial ineptitude and impartiality” by the Justices.
“We are appalled that the Appeal Court supposedly manned by men of high jurisprudence would wittingly decide to disenfranchise a majority section of Abia electorate, three LGAs in all; in effort to give victory to Alex Otti and APGA which they didn’t get at the election. Even when the Appeal Court judges had the option of ordering for a rerun so that Alex Otti and his party, APGA will once more text their popularity in the poll, they chose to award undeserved victory to him”.
