Buhari Inherited Burden From Jonathan – Wole Soyinka

NOBEL laureate Prof Wole Soyinka has said it would take time for President Muhammadu Buhari to clear the rot he inherited from his predecessor, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, whose administration, he believed, left a “heavy baggage” and “burden” that may take a while to tackle.
But, the playwright urged President to sustain efforts at improving the economy. He spoke in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The literary icon was scheduled to speak at a public lecture on the theme: Politics, Culture and the New Africa.
He said: “This (Buhari) administration has inherited a heavy baggage. While I am critical in some aspects of the priority, I think that to clear up the mess left by previous administrations is going to take quite a while, especially in the economy sector. So, I don’t use words like optimism or pessimism; I’m just pragmatic. I look at what is on the ground and, of course, wherever I can intervene, I do both privately and publicly.”

Also speaking, another renowned author, Prof Kole Omotoso, said the Buhari administration had tackled a number of things, but added that the President must intensify his effort to alleviate the suffering of the people.
“We are going in the right direction but in the process, we need to do so many things. We need to look at not just the suffering of the people but the way people seem to indulge in bearing suffering. It is as if even if you try to solve the problem for them they will prefer to be suffering and smiling,” Prof Omotoso said.

Crystal Palace In Talks To Sign Christian Benteke From Liverpool

Crystal Palace are in discussions with Liverpool over a move to sign Christian Benteke, sources at both clubs have told ESPN.

Press Association Sport reported on Friday that the Reds rejected a £25 million bid from Palace for Benteke, 25, with the club holding out for an offer of £30m plus add-ons.

Liverpool are looking to recoup most of the £32.5m they paid Aston Villa for the Belgium international last year, and sources have said that they remain in negotiations with the Eagles over a fee.

Liverpool are ready to sell the striker after he failed to make an impact at the club last season, and he does not figure in Jurgen Klopp’s plans going forward so is prepared to move on this summer.

Benteke was the signing Klopp’s predecessor Brendan Rodgers pushed for last year, but after scoring seven goals in his first nine appearances, he managed just three in his last 23 matches.

Christian Benteke looks to be on his way out of Liverpool.

Benteke fell out of favour at Anfield and compatriot Divock Origi, aged 21 and in his first season in English football, was selected ahead of him as he struggled to meet the demands of Klopp’s pressing game.

With Danny Ings back to full fitness after a cruciate knee ligament operation, Benteke is even further down the pecking order with Daniel Sturridge, Origi, Ings and Roberto Firmino ahead of him in terms of selection.

Benteke, whose Euro 2016 was ended by Wales on Friday night, will have extended summer leave as those players not involved in the competition or Copa America return for preseason training on Saturday.

Germany Outlast Italy On Penalties To Reach Semifinals

Germany triumphed 6-5 in a wild, nine-round penalty shootout to advance to the semifinals at Euro 2016 over Italy after the game ended 1-1 after extra time.

After Leonardo Bonucci’s penalty cancelled out Mesut Ozil’s second-half opener for Germany, Manuel Neuer stopped Matteo Darmian’s effort in the ninth round of penalties and Jonas Hector struck the winning goal to put Germany through.

The victory in Bordeaux was the world champions’ first over the Italians in a major tournament, following four Italy wins in knockout stages and four group-stage draws.

Both teams started with three at the back, and though there was plenty of possession in each other’s halves, true chances were hard to find in the opening minutes.

Germany were forced into an early change when Sami Khedira pulled up while chasing a loose ball in the 12th minute, signalled to the bench and was soon replaced by Bastian Schweinsteiger.

On 20 minuets, Gomez found himself in behind the defence and stretched to get his foot to a long Mats Hummels pass, but the forward could not control it and it fell to Gianluigi Buffon to grab.

Germany had a goal ruled out in the 27th minute, when Hummels found Schweinsteiger with another long, lofted pass, though the substitute could have no real complaint after fouling Mattia De Sciglio to get to the ball.

Italy fought off the German pressure and had a chance of their own when Joshua Kimmich misplayed a cross. It fell to De Sciglio, whose cross was picked out by Jerome Boateng before it could reach Emanuele Giaccherini.

Hector’s 35th-minute cross took a deflection off of Alessandro Florenzi and fell at the near post, but Buffon gathered it after initially spilling it on an awkward bounce.

Gomez was again the target man as the striker cut across the box to meet Kimmich’s 41st-minute cross, only to head well over the bar.

A minute later, Germany threatened again when Toni Kroos’ shot from the top of the box took a few deflections before falling to Thomas Muller, who is still in search of his first goal of the tournament and would not find it here as Buffon caught his soft attempt.

Italy then had the best opportunity of the first half when Giaccherini stayed onside to receive a long pass, then cut back a pass from the byline. It skipped right past Florenzi, who was waiting to tap in, and Stefano Sturaro lashed a shot that fell wide of the far post after a touch from Boateng.

Germany had the first threat of the second half in the 54th minute, when Kroos passed to a streaking Gomez, who laid off to Muller. The striker took a shot that Florenzi acrobatically put behind for a corner, but the shot appeared to be headed wide anyway.

Italy then had three players — Stuaro, De Sciglio and Marco Parolo — booked in as many minutes as they tried to quash the German attack.

But the yellow cards only prolonged the inevitable as Germany found the breakthrough in the 65th minute.

Gomez prevented the ball from going out on the sideline and found Hector on an overlapping run. The left-back’s pass to the centre of the box took a deflection off of Bonucci and fell directly into Ozil’s path to score.

Buffon prevented Germany from doubling their advantage three minutes later as Hummels played in Gomez, but the goalkeeper was there to tip over the forward’s audacious attempt with his back to goal.

Italy nearly equalised in the 74th minute when Graziano Pelle’s shot from eight yards flashed past the post, but the goal soon came when Hungarian referee Viktor Kassai pointed to the penalty spot three minutes later.

Boateng was caught with both arms above his head as he tried to get in front of Giorgio Chiellini, and the defender’s flicked header came off his elbow. Bonucci made no mistake with a well-taken penalty past the outstretched Neuer to level the score.

And Italy nearly went ahead on 81 minutes when Eder cut inside along the top of the box and fed Pelle, who could only manage an off-target shot.

The game headed to extra time, where

NGO Applauds FG For Post-UTME Cancellation

An NGO, Education Rights Campaign (ERC) has described the recent cancellation of the conduct of the post-UTME by the Federal Government as a relief to parents and candidates.

The National Coordinator of the group, Mr Hassan Soweto, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Lagos.
Soweto said that the cancellation was a right step in the right direction, as it would go a long way in relieving parents the financial burden associated with such examination every year.
He said that candidates should be granted direct access to institutions of their choice on presentation of their qualifying certificates and proof of having sat for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
“I think government has done the right thing by cancelling this post-UTME.
“t was exploitative and therefore, a kind of financial burden on the parents.
“However, I think the development is also a wake-up call for the Federal Government to address identified lapses in the conduct of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in organising UTME.
“This will ensure that results from such examination will be held in high esteem,’’ he said.
Soweto said that there was an urgent need for government to provide more tertiary institutions, provide necessary facilities as well as upgrade the existing ones.
“Actually the major challenge facing most of our tertiary institutions today is the issue of carrying capacity.
“The argument, therefore, is that there might not be enough space to accommodate majority of candidates that qualified at the UTME and that for me, is one major reason for the post-UTME.
“So for this cancellation of the post-UTME to be effective, government must wake up to its responsibility in providing quality access to tertiary education,’’ he said.

NAN reports that the Federal Government had announced cancellation of the conduct of post-UTME at the recent Joint Policy meeting to decide cut off marks for candidates seeking placements into tertiary institutions,
The Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, however advised that institutions were at liberty to conduct screening to select their candidates.
The minister also warned that institutions that go against the directive would be sanctioned.
Adamu also urged all institutions that had already collected fees from candidates for the conduct of the examination under any guise, to return same to such students with immediate effect.
Meanwhile, heads of universities had been meeting with the government in an attempt to come up with standing guidelines for the screening of candidates for admission for the 2016/2017 academic session.

Abia: One state, 2 govs?

By Emmanuel Aziken, Political Editor, Innocent Anaba, Anayo Okoli, Omezia Ajayi  Abdulwahab Abdulah,  Dapo Akinrefon, Charles Kumolu & Gbenga Oke
UMUAHIA — Constitutional chaos broke out in Abia State, yesterday, after the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, issued a certificate of return to Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governorship claimant, Uchechukwu Sampson Ogah.

Ikpeazu and Ogah
The commission said its action was on the basis of a court ruling, Monday, by an Abuja Federal High Court which removed Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu from office as governor of the state, allegedly for failing to fulfil requirements expected of a candidate for the governorship.

The INEC action immediately paralysed activities in the Ikpeazu-controlled Government House in Umuahia, setting anxiety among officials and other stakeholders.

A widely-publicised lecture to be delivered by Ikpeazu at the Abia State University, Uturu at 11.00 a.m., for which most of Ikpeazu’s cabinet had converged was unceremoniously aborted, following news of the development in Abuja.

Ikpeazu in a riposte, filed and obtained an injunction from an Abia High Court stopping the state chief judge, the president of the Customary Court of Appeal or any other judicial officer from swearing Ogah into office.

In a move interpreted by some as keeping Ogah at bay, the Ikpeazu administration declared today and Monday public holidays. The administration said the public holidays were to honour Chief Ojo Maduekwe, who died on Wednesday.

Such developments followed yesterday’s issuance of a certificate of return to Ogah who was runner-up in the PDP governorship primary won by Ikpeazu.

Two stakeholders in the PDP, Obasi Uba Ekagbara and Chukwuemeka Mba, had taken Ikpeazu to court, following his emergence as candidate, that he was not qualified to become governor on the grounds that his tax papers were deficient.

In his declaratory ruling on Monday, Justice Okon Abang who heard the case, agreed that Ikpeazu’s tax and income papers were defective, saying he was not qualified to be the candidate of the PDP and immediately ordered that the runner-up in the primary, Ogah, be sworn in as governor.

Ikpeazu had on Wednesday, filed his appeal against the judgment and had also declared that he would remain governor.

INEC issues certificate of  return to Ogah

INEC in a surprising turn, however, issued a Certificate of Return to Ogah.

INEC National Commissioner in charge of the South-East, Ambassador Lawrence Nwuruku, said the commission only submitted itself to the lawful order of a court, adding that as a citizen, he could go to jail if he flouted a valid court order.

He said if another court upturned the decision, INEC would again submit itself to the bidding of the court.

“The situation is that we are simply obeying the court order. The court said with immediate effect, without wasting of time, we should issue him Certificate of Return and that is what we have done — to obey the court order.

“If the court tomorrow issues another order, we would obey the same. By the grace of God, I am the INEC Commissioner in charge of South-East. I’ll do the same thing if the court orders us to do so, if court says we should issue the same certificate to another person.

“In this case, court ordered us to issue a Certificate of Return to the person who won the election and that is Uche Ogah. I was the person who gave the Certificate of Return to Gov. Ikpeazu as he was declared winner.

“Now, the court has said otherwise. One thing we know is that we are not above the law and we cannot disobey the laws of the land. After the court, another person we obey in our land is God and my conscience is my God.

Manchester United Unveil Zlatan Ibrahimovic After He Passes Medical (Photos)

Zlatan Ibrahimovic says he is ‘ready to create more special memories in England’ after his move to Manchester United was finally confirmed. The 34-year-old became Jose Mourinho’s second signing of the summer on Friday and admitted he was ‘delighted’ to join United.

Mourinho, who worked with the striker at Inter Milan, said that his new signing needed no introduction, adding: ‘The statistics speak for themselves.’
The transfer was one of football’s worst-kept secrets and Ibrahimovic, who has signed on a one-year deal at Old Trafford, said he was relishing the opportunity. He said;

‘I am absolutely delighted to be joining Manchester United and am looking forward to playing in the Premier League,’ he said.

‘It goes without saying that I cannot wait to work with Jose Mourinho once again. He is a fantastic manager and I am ready for this new and exciting challenge.

‘I have thoroughly enjoyed my career so far and have some great memories. I am now ready to create more special memories in England.’

Nollywood Plays Major Role In Nigeria’s Economy – Adeosun

The Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, on Friday said the Nigerian movie industry popularly known as Nollywood is very important to the nation’s economy.

Speaking at a film industry stakeholders’ workshop aimed at restructuring and reinvigorating Project ACT Nollywood, the minister said the Federal Government was determined to create deliverables that would ensure maximum value for the industry’s stakeholders and Nigerians generally.

The Project ACT Nollywood is a N3 billion grant set up by the federal government to address challenges impeding the growth of the movie industry.

The workshop was to examine outstanding areas of the programme yet to be implemented, review such and ensure that they are still appropriate for the industry.

Adeosun said the problem of the industry was not in the quality of movies produced but in the structure of the industry.

She said it was regrettable that pirates were the main beneficiaries of the industry, adding that they waited for creative talents to create a product while they claimed the profit.

According to her, most of those who create the value do not actually get the value in terms of returns.

The minister stressed the need to ensure sustainability in the industry, adding that a committee would be inaugurated to address issues raised at the workshop.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, on his part, said proper distribution of movies was very important in the industry.

Represented by Mrs. Grace Gebe, the minister said without proper distribution channels, piracy would continue to thrive in the country.

Lagos Bans Street Trading, Buyers & Sellers To Get 6 Months Jail Term

This is bad news for gala and lacasera sellers and consumers… So if you are caught buying bottled water, gala, cake etc in traffic, you will get 6mths jail term. Oh no!!!! *sob*

The Lagos State Government on Friday said that from July 1, 2016, it would commence a total enforcement against street trading and street hawkers, saying that the law banning their activities across the metropolis would take its full course. He also says buyers, sellers liable to N90,000 fine, six months jail term or both.

Speaking at a live interview session on Television Continental, the State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode said that the renewed enforcement is in line with Section One of the Lagos State Street Trading and Illegal Market Prohibition Law 2003 which restricts street trading and hawking in the metropolis.

The Governor, while sympathizing with the family of a street hawker who was knocked down by an articulated truck while trying to evade arrest from officials of Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) along Maryland Bus stop on Wednesday, regretted that the situation led to the destruction of public assets.

“It is not in our DNA to allow someone to just die by road accident or the way it happened in respect of the incident. But beyond the fact that we lost one person while crossing the road as a result of evading arrest by KAI officials, I need to tell Lagosians that over 49 buses were actually destroyed and it is costing us like almost N139 million to put those buses back on the road,” he said.
Consequently, Governor Ambode said the State Executive Council has resolved to enforce the Law, which according to him makes both the hawker and the buyer liable of the offence.

“The issue is we need to enforce our laws because we already have a law in respect of that and then there is a clause in it which says the buyer and the seller are both liable and that we are going to fine them either N90, 000 or a six month jail term.

“What we are doing on traffic is that we are introducing new strategies to eliminate traffic but Lagos being a cosmopolitan city, you cannot totally eliminate it but now this is the case, in the next few days, you will see on the street of Lagos signs that will be warning you that buyers and hawkers should be aware that there are consequences,” Governor Ambode said.

children fatally stabbed in Memphi

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Four young children were stabbed to death in a gated apartment complex in suburban Memphis on Friday, and police took their mother into custody for questioning. She has not been charged.

Deputies were called to the complex in unincorporated Shelby County shortly before 1 p.m., said county Sheriff Bill Oldham, who did not specifically allege that the mother had stabbed the children.

“This is an egregious act of evil that has shocked us to our core,” Oldham said. “I will never understand how anyone can do this.”

Officials have not released the ages of the children, but sheriff’s office spokesman Earle Farrell said deputies responding to the scene called them “babies.”

“What can you say?” said neighbor Sean Ahearn. “It’s just a terrible, terrible thing.”

Ahearn said he didn’t know the family by name, but that he often saw the children, who all appeared to be under age 6, playing in the front yard. They liked to pet his dog when he was taking it for a walk, he said.

“From what I saw, they were very open and friendly kids,” he said. “You never imagine that this kind of thing could happen.”

The investigation is in a very preliminary stage and investigators do not know if the mother had any mental health issues, Oldham said. He said authorities are working to notify the next of kin and won’t release names before that.

“One of the most difficult questions in any investigation is always, ‘Why did this happen?’” he said.

Oldham said the district attorney general’s special victims’ unit has been called in and Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell has promised all resources necessary for the investigation.

County Commissioner Mark Billingsley also said the county would work to help the family of the children recover.

“It’s just a very sad day,” he said. “It’s really beyond words, quite frankly.”

The apartment where the stabbing occurred is in a gated community with a golf course called The Greens at Irene. On Friday afternoon, deputies were standing at the gate house questioning motorists as they drove into the neighborhood.

Resident Patricia Johnson spoke with reporters from her car Friday afternoon. She said she wasn’t allowed to leave for two hours as deputies investigated the scene.

She has a child, and said she burst into tears when she heard about the killings.

“I can’t fathom that,” she said. “What would babies do to make you do that?”

The state Department of Children’s Service has offered its assistance to local law enforcement, but has no record of interaction with the slain children, said spokesman Rob Johnson.

“We’ve done an exhaustive search and we are not aware of any contact with this family,” he said.

The news triggered painful memories for Johnson and others in Memphis: In 2008, a man’s bloody rampage in the city left six dead, including two children, ages 2 and 4.

Jessie Dotson was convicted of shooting his brother during an argument at a house on Lester Street, then attacking everyone else in the house with a gun, boards and knives in an attempt to eliminate witnesses.
